Best ebike hitch rack for heavy e-bikes: weight limits

Last checked Oct 23, 2026 · By EbikePost editors

E-bike on a hitch rack on an SUV at a forest trailhead
Short answer

Add up your e-bike's weight, then pick a hitch rack whose per-bike limit is higher than that figure, because many racks are rated at 60 lb per bike and plenty of e-bikes weigh more. Of the racks below, Kuat's Piston ION lists the highest limit at 100 lb per bike, Saris's Cycle-On lists 70 lb, Thule's EasyFold XT lists 65 lb and Kuat's NV 2.0 lists 60 lb. Limits are quoted from each maker's page. Check your vehicle's hitch and tongue-weight rating too.

Racks that lift a bike onto a hitch are rated per bike and sometimes in total. A rating that suits an ordinary bike may not suit an e-bike, so check the number before you buy.

What to look for

  1. Per-bike weight limit. The limit is the maker's own figure. Compare it to the weight on your bike's spec page. On our bike pages, the maker-listed weights of the e-bikes we track run from about 60 lb to 86 lb.
  2. Total load and your vehicle. The rack's own weight counts. For example, a 58 lb rack with two 80 lb bikes puts about 218 lb on the hitch (our arithmetic). Your vehicle's manual sets the maximum hitch load, and Thule says that figure takes priority over the rack's rating.
  3. Hitch size. Racks come in 1.25 inch and 2 inch versions. Some models only fit a 2 inch hitch, and Kuat says its NV 2.0 add-ons only work on the 2 inch size.
  4. Ramp or lift. A ramp saves lifting a heavy bike. Some racks include it and some sell it separately.
  5. Tire width. Fat-tire e-bikes need wide trays or strap extenders. Makers list a maximum tire width and what you need beyond it.
  6. Rack weight and storage. Heavy racks need a second pair of hands to install. Some fold when unused.
  7. Bikes carried. Several racks have a lower per-bike rating when you add more bikes.

Our picks

Kuat Piston ION

  • Why: The highest per-bike limit of the four, aimed at e-bikes.
  • Key spec: Kuat lists "100 LBS. Capacity Per Bike" for two bikes with a 2 inch hitch. Kuat's page lists lower limits for some uses: 80 lb per bike on a chassis-mounted RV hitch and 50 lb per bike off-road. A bike ramp is included. Max tire width is 4.8 inches with a strap extender kit on 18 to 29 inch wheels. The rack weighs 68 lb.
  • Check: It fits a 2 inch hitch only. The variant we checked on 23 October 2026 showed as sold out.

Saris Cycle-On 2-Bike Hitch Rack

  • Why: A platform rack with built-in wheels and a ramp, aimed at riders who do not want to lift.
  • Key spec: Saris describes it as "Built for eBikes, up to 70 lbs per bike," with integrated wheels and an included telescoping ramp.
  • Check: Saris's page we read did not list hitch size, tire width or rack weight; confirm these on the product page.

Thule EasyFold XT 2

  • Why: A folding platform rack that Thule badges as "Designed for e-bikes."
  • Key spec: Thule lists a 65 lb maximum bike weight, a 130 lb load capacity and a 45 lb rack weight. Max tire width is 3 inches, or 4.7 inches with optional XXL Fatbike Wheel Straps. A foldable loading ramp is listed in the specifications.
  • Check: The page's hitch size was not listed in the section we read, and the description calls the ramp optional while the specifications list one. Confirm both with Thule before buying.

Kuat NV 2.0

  • Why: A two-bike base rack that can grow to three or four bikes on the 2 inch size, with a 60 lb rating that suits lighter e-bikes.
  • Key spec: Kuat lists up to 60 lb per bike for two bikes, 50 lb per bike for three and 40 lb per bike for four. It comes in 1.25 inch and 2 inch versions (55 lb and 58 lb for the 2-bike rack) and takes tires up to 5 inches with a strap extender kit. A bike ramp is sold separately for heavier e-bikes.
  • Check: Kuat's tire-width notes disagree between the spec sheet (3.5 to 5 inches) and the FAQ (3.25 to 5 inches). Confirm with Kuat.

FAQ

What weight should I use for my e-bike? Use the maker's listed bike weight, then add any bags, a second battery or accessories left on the bike. If you take the battery off, the bike weighs less, but check the manual before removing it.

Is a 60 lb rack ever fine? Only if your e-bike weighs less than 60 lb in the form you load it. Many e-bikes weigh more, so check first.

Do I need a ramp? Not required, but with an e-bike over 60 lb a ramp is much easier than lifting.

Will my vehicle take the load? Look up your hitch class and tongue-weight limit in the vehicle's manual. The lowest rated part sets your limit.

Does the rack hold fat-tire bikes? Check each maker's maximum tire width. Wider tires may need strap extenders.

Where do the numbers come from? Each rack's maker page, linked in the sources. We compare published specs and have not loaded these racks ourselves.
