Bosch eBike error codes list: 4xx, 5xx and 6xx explained
Last checked Oct 23, 2026 ยท By EbikePost editors
Bosch publishes its fault codes itself. In the Kiox owner's manual (BUI330), the table lists three-digit codes with a cause and a remedy, and for most of them the remedy is "restart the system" and then "contact your Bosch eBike dealer" if the problem persists. Codes are grouped by number: 4xx for the display and connections, 5xx for the drive unit and system, 6xx for the battery and charger, 7xx for the gearbox.
Which Bosch list is this?
This page follows the Owner's Manual Kiox (BUI330), document 1 270 U20 XBK, dated 2018.06, which is on Bosch's own site. It is an older Kiox manual. Newer Bosch systems show errors in the eBike Flow app and on Bosch's help center, which says current error messages appear on the app's home screen with a description and solution steps. Code meanings and wording can differ by system and software version, so use the list for your own display and drive unit. Many bike brands use Bosch drive units, so look at the label on your drive unit and display.
Bosch's manual also says you can keep riding without assistance after a fault, but "should have your eBike checked before completing any more journeys," and that repairs should only be done by a certified dealer.
4xx: display, buttons and connections
| Code | Meaning (Bosch manual) | What you can safely check | When to contact |
|---|---|---|---|
| 410, 418 | Buttons on the on-board computer (410) or operating unit (418) are jammed | Look for dust or dirt keeping a button pressed and clean it, as the manual says | If the code stays |
| 414, 422, 423, 424 | Connection problem with the operating unit (414), drive unit (422), battery (423) or components (424) | Switch off and check that the battery is seated and the display sits properly in its holder | Bosch's remedy is to have the connections checked, which goes beyond what an owner should do |
| 419, 426, 431 | Configuration, internal timeout or software version error | Restart the system | If it persists, contact a Bosch dealer |
| 430 | On-board computer's internal battery is drained | Charge the computer in its holder or by USB | If it does not charge |
| 440, 450 | Internal fault in drive unit (440) or internal software error (450) | Restart the system | If it persists |
| 460 | USB port fault | Remove the cable from the computer's USB port | If it persists |
| 490 | Internal fault in the on-board computer | None listed | Bosch says to have the computer checked |
5xx: drive unit and system
| Code | Meaning (Bosch manual) | What you can safely check | When to contact |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500, 510, 511 | Internal fault in the drive unit or its sensor | Restart the system | If it persists |
| 502 | Bike light fault | Look at the light and its visible wiring, then restart | If it persists |
| 503 | Speed sensor fault | Restart the system | If it persists |
| 530 | Battery fault | Switch off, take the battery out and put it back in, then restart | If it persists |
| 540 | Temperature error: eBike outside tolerable range | Switch off and let the drive unit cool down or warm up, then restart | If it persists |
| 591, 592, 593 | Authentication error (591), incompatible components (592), configuration error (593) | 591: switch off, remove and reseat the battery, restart. 593: restart | Always if it persists; 592 means a compatible display is needed |
| 595, 596 | Communication error with the gearbox | Bosch says to check the wiring to the gearbox, then restart | Wiring checks: contact a shop |
Code 550 means Bosch's system has detected an unauthorized consumer, meaning an add-on electrical part. The manual says to remove it, restart, and contact a dealer if it persists. Removing or tracing wiring is not an owner job: contact the maker or a qualified e-bike shop. Do the same for any code that tells you to have connections checked.
6xx: battery and charger
| Code | Meaning (Bosch manual) | What you can safely check | When to contact |
|---|---|---|---|
| 602 | Internal battery fault, including while charging | Not charging: restart. Charging: disconnect the charger, restart the system, reattach the charger | If it persists |
| 603, 610, 640 | Internal battery fault or battery voltage fault | Restart the system | If it persists |
| 605 | Battery temperature error, including during charging | Charging: disconnect the charger and leave the battery to cool. Riding: let the bike reach a tolerable temperature | If it persists |
| 606 | External battery fault | Look at visible wiring, then restart | If it persists |
| 620 | Charger fault | Bosch says to replace the charger | Contact a Bosch dealer about the right charger |
| 655 | Multiple battery faults | Switch off, remove and reseat the battery, restart | If it persists |
| 656 | Software version error | None | A dealer needs to update the software |
| 7xx | Gearbox fault | Read the gearbox maker's manual | Per that manual |
Safe steps for any Bosch code
- Note the code and, if you can, when it appears (on start, under load, while charging).
- Switch the system off. Check the battery is fully seated and the display is in its holder. Clean around stuck buttons.
- Restart. If the code is a temperature code, wait for the bike to reach a normal temperature first.
- Use only the maker's charger. See e-bike battery not charging.
- If the code returns, take the bike to a Bosch dealer or the bike maker.
What this list does not cover
Bosch's help center says it lists all codes with descriptions and solution steps online, but its pages did not load for us when we checked, so we have not copied from them. If your code is not above, search Bosch's help center for your drive unit.
Battery safety: use the maker's charger and follow your manual. See UL 2849 and the CPSC Micromobility Information Center.
Other brands: see the error codes hub.
