Best ebike cover for outdoor storage: 4 picks and sizes

E-bike under a fitted green waterproof cover on a wet patio
Short answer

For an e-bike that lives outdoors, choose a cover that is long enough for your bike, has a stated waterproof coating, and has a hole for a lock. Oxford's Aquatex Pro Single and Cargo covers are made for longer e-bikes, and the basic Aquatex is the lighter option. Specs below come from the makers' pages; we have not tried the covers ourselves.

A cover does not replace a garage, but it keeps rain, sun and dust off the frame, display and charging port while the bike is parked. The right size matters most, because many e-bikes are longer and heavier than a standard bike.

What to look for

  1. Length and height. Compare the cover's listed dimensions with your bike's length and its tallest point (handlebar, rack, basket or child seat).
  2. Fabric and waterproofing. Look for a stated coating or sealed seams, not just "water resistant".
  3. Lock holes. A hole at the front and rear lets you lock the bike without taking the cover off.
  4. Fit in wind. Elastic hems, belly straps and drawcords keep the cover from lifting.
  5. UV resistance. Sun degrades cheap fabric. Look for a UV statement.
  6. A storage bag. A bag helps you pack the cover away when it is wet.

Battery and charging: read your manual

A cover is not a guide to battery care. Makers publish their own storage and charging advice, so use the manual for your bike. As one example, Bosch says to charge in a dry, well-ventilated place at 0 to 40 °C and that a charge level of 30 to 60% is ideal for storage. See Bosch's battery guidance and then your own maker's.

Choosing a size

Start with the cover's listed length and compare it with your bike, measured wheel to wheel including any rack or basket. Oxford lists 200 cm for its basic single cover and 210 cm for the Pro single. Its Cargo cover lists a width of 215 to 280 cm. If your bike is between sizes, go up a size, and check that the height covers the handlebar and any bags on the rack.

How to fit a cover

  • Wipe the bike dry and let hot parts cool before covering it.
  • Put the cover over the saddle first, then pull it down over the wheels.
  • Fasten the straps and drawcords, and pass the lock through the lock hole if there is one.
  • Shake off water and let the cover dry before you pack it into its bag.

FAQ

Is a cover enough to protect my e-bike outside? It helps against rain, sun and dust. A garage or shed is better, and a lock is still necessary.

Will a cover stop theft? Oxford says police initiatives found covers can be useful, since a thief cannot see what bike is under them. It is not a lock.

Can I cover the bike while it is charging? Follow your bike maker's manual. Our pick pages do not give charging advice.

How do I know what size to buy? Measure the bike's length and its tallest point, and compare with the dimensions listed by the maker.
