Best ebike kickstand: heavy-duty stands and weight ratings

Dual-leg kickstand holding a cargo e-bike upright on a sidewalk
Short answer

Choose a kickstand by its maker's maximum load, not by the label "e-bike". For most e-bikes, look at a stand rated for 50 kg or more, such as Pletscher's Comp 40 Flex or Ursus's Jumbo (100 kg). For cargo bikes, look at a stand rated for the full loaded weight, such as Massload's CL-KA133 (250 kg). Ratings below come from the makers' pages; we have not tried the stands ourselves.

An e-bike can weigh much more than a standard bike, and a loaded cargo bike more again. A stand that is too light will bend or let the bike fall. Makers print a maximum load, and it is the number to compare with your bike.

What to look for

  1. Maximum load. Compare it with your bike's weight plus whatever you carry. Check the weight in the e-bike's manual.
  2. Mount type. Rear stands bolt to the chainstay, with either 18 mm or 40 mm hole spacing. Center stands bolt under the bottom bracket. Check what your frame offers.
  3. Wheel size and tire width. Makers list the wheel sizes they cover. Ursus says its Jumbo is not compatible with fat tires.
  4. Adjustable length. A stand that is the wrong length leaves the bike leaning. Adjustable ones can be set to fit.
  5. Cargo suitability. Ursus says its Jumbo stands are not for cargo bikes. Pick a stand the maker says suits one.
  6. Warning labels. Some stands are marked as not for e-bikes. Read the page before buying.

Our picks

Ursus Jumbo Kickstand (300 mm)

  • Why: A double-leg center stand that Ursus rates for e-bikes, family bikes and bikes with bags.
  • Key spec: Ursus lists aluminum alloy, 26 to 29 inch wheels, a 300 mm length, a 1.4 kg weight and a 100 kg (220 lb) load capacity.
  • Check: Ursus says it is not compatible with fat tires and not for cargo bikes.

Ursus Jumbo EVO Kickstand (300 mm)

  • Why: A lighter version of the Jumbo, for lighter e-bikes.
  • Key spec: Ursus lists aluminum alloy, 26 to 29 inch wheels, a 1 kg weight and an 80 kg (176 lb) load capacity.
  • Check: Same limits as the Jumbo: not for fat tires and not for cargo bikes. Compare 80 kg with your bike's weight and load.
  • Source: Ursus.

Pletscher Comp 40 Flex

  • Why: A rear stand with an adjustable strut for bikes whose frame has the 40 mm hole spacing.
  • Key spec: Pletscher lists a 50 kg maximum load, an adjustable strut length of 210 to 375 mm, 20 to 29 inch wheels, a 40 mm support hole distance and a 360 g weight.
  • Check: The Comp 18 Flex is the same stand for 18 mm spacing. Pletscher's page does not name e-bikes, so compare 50 kg with your total weight. Its Comp 40 Zoom is rated for only 18 kg.

Pletscher Optima Flex

  • Why: A center stand with an adjustable strut, for frames with a center mount.
  • Key spec: Pletscher lists a 50 kg maximum load, a strut length of 210 to 390 mm adjustable by grub screw, and a 310 g weight.
  • Check: Pletscher's page lists the same 50 kg for several Flex models. The other Optima stands on the page are rated for only 25 kg.

Massload CL-KA133

  • Why: The stand on Massload's list that is described for cargo bikes.
  • Key spec: Massload lists a maximum loading of 250 kg, dual screw reinforcement, a locking system for stability, and a customized size.
  • Check: Because it is made to order, confirm the size and availability with the seller. Massload's CL-KA56 stand is marked "E-bikes prohibited" with a 25 kg limit, so do not confuse the two.

How to fit and use a kickstand

  • Follow the maker's mounting instructions, and use the bolt length that matches your frame. Ursus includes four bolt lengths.
  • Tighten to the maker's stated torque, if given, and recheck after your first ride.
  • Park on firm, level ground, and load the bike evenly so it does not tip.
  • If the frame has no mount, ask a bike shop about a stand that fits.
  • Do not leave a heavy e-bike on a stand with a damaged or bent leg.

FAQ

Will any kickstand hold an e-bike? No. Check the maker's maximum load against your bike's weight plus cargo. Some stands are marked as not for e-bikes.

Center or rear stand? A center stand mounts under the bottom bracket area and a rear stand bolts to the chainstay. Use the type your frame supports. Ursus's Jumbo is a double-leg center stand.

Does the e-bike's maker allow a kickstand? Many frames already have mounts. Check the manual for the allowed type and the maximum load.

Can a stand work with a cargo e-bike? Only if the maker says so. Ursus says its Jumbo stands are not for cargo bikes. Massload lists the CL-KA133 for cargo.
