Puncture-proof ebike tires: sizes and what fits
Last checked Oct 31, 2026 · By EbikePost editors

The thickest puncture protection on our list is Schwalbe's Marathon Plus (a 5 mm SmartGuard layer, rated E-25), and the one Schwalbe built for e-bikes of all classes is the Marathon E-Plus (ECE-R75 certified, puncture protection level 7). For fast e-bikes, Schwalbe's Super Moto-X carries ECE-R75 as well, and Continental's Contact Plus and eContact Plus are both marked for e-bikes up to 50 km/h. Before you buy anything, read the size off your current tire's sidewall: the tire has to match your rim. Specs here are from the makers' pages; we don't ride or test tires.
You get your third flat of the season on the same commute, and every shop answer is "get a tougher tire." That's right, but the tire has to fit your wheel and be rated for your bike. This page covers both.
What "puncture-proof" really means
No tire is puncture-proof. A heavier breaker layer under the tread makes glass and thorns much less likely to reach the tube, at the cost of weight and sometimes ride feel. Look for three things:
- The protection layer. Makers name their own: Schwalbe's SmartGuard, Continental's Breaker plies.
- An e-bike rating. Schwalbe's site filters tires as E-25 (suitable for e-bikes up to 25 km/h assist) and E-50 (up to 50 km/h). ECE-R75 is a European tire approval that Schwalbe and Continental mark on their e-bike tires.
- A size that fits your rim, below.
Our picks
Schwalbe Marathon Plus
- Why: The strongest puncture protection of the group on Schwalbe's own description.
- Key spec: Schwalbe lists a patented 5 mm SmartGuard layer and calls it "the most puncture resistant pneumatic tire there is." The page lists it as E-25 and says the main sizes are approved and tested for e-bikes up to 50 km/h.
- Check: Schwalbe's page doesn't list weight, sizes or maximum pressure. Use the sidewall and Schwalbe's size list for your rim. A gauge is needed, because a thumb check isn't reliable for this tire.

Schwalbe Marathon E-Plus
- Why: The version with e-bikes in mind, with a reinforced carcass for load.
- Key spec: Schwalbe lists ECE-R75 certification ("ready for e-bikes of all classes"), puncture protection level 7 from "Smart-DualGuard" (SmartGuard plus two RaceGuard fabric layers), the ADDIX-E compound and an anti-aging sidewall.
- Check: The page doesn't give exact sizes or maximum pressure, and says it suits only up to a certain tire width. Pick your size from Schwalbe's list for your rim.

Schwalbe Super Moto-X
- Why: A wide, motorbike-look tire for fast e-bikes.
- Key spec: Schwalbe lists its "DoubleDefense" construction, ECE-R75 "for fast e-bikes," and a width up to 70 mm.
- Check: No pressure or size table was on the page we read. It's a wide tire, so check your frame and fork clearance and rim width before you buy.

Continental Contact Plus
- Why: A city and trekking tire with a puncture-resistant breaker and an e-bike marking.
- Key spec: Continental lists "E-Bike Ready | ECE-R75," says it's specially designed for e-bikes up to 50 km/h, and names the SafetyPlus Breaker, "an extremely cut and puncture resistant breaker ply."
- Check: The page doesn't list sizes, weight or pressure. Continental says tires marked e50 are also certified for S-Pedelecs; check the marking on the tire you choose.

Continental eContact Plus
- Why: The e-bike and cargo version of the same family.
- Key spec: Continental lists "E-Bike Ready | ECE-R75," a "Safety Plus Pro Breaker" of tightly woven PolyX fibers and a Safety-Level 7 badge.
- Check: The page we read didn't give sizes, weight or pressure, and its product naming was inconsistent. Confirm the exact model and size with the retailer or Continental.

Maxxis and others. We looked at Maxxis's puncture-resistant SilkShield tires. We couldn't find a Maxxis page that states an e-bike rating for them, so we haven't listed one. If your bike maker specifies a different brand, follow the bike maker.
Match your tire size from the sidewall
Every tire has its size printed on the sidewall, usually in two forms.
- Find the numbers. Look for a metric pair such as 40-622 and an inch size such as 28 x 1.50. Our example is from a retailer listing that pairs "28x1.50 (40-622)."
- Read the pair. The pair is the ETRTO size: the first number is the tire width in millimeters, the second is the diameter of the rim where the tire seats, also in millimeters. The second number is the one that must match your rim.
- Match the rim number exactly. A tire marked 622 fits a 622 rim. Schwalbe's own filter lists both 622 and 584 sizes (50-584, for example), and those are not interchangeable.
- Check the width. Pick a width your frame and fork have room for, and one the tire's page says suits your rim width. Schwalbe's pages warn that each tire only suits up to a certain maximum width.
- Check your bike maker's page. The manual or spec page states the size the bike came with.
- Set the pressure from the tire's range. Use the range on the sidewall and the maker's guidance. See e-bike tire pressure and our pump picks.
Take a photo of your sidewall before you shop. Retailers' size lists use both the metric and the inch notations, and the photo lets you check both.
FAQ
Can I put any tire on my e-bike? Use one that fits your rim and carries an e-bike rating suited to your bike's assisted speed. Check the bike maker's guidance too.
What does E-25 or E-50 mean? It's how Schwalbe's site labels tires for e-bikes up to 25 or 50 km/h. Continental's e50 marking is described as also certified for S-Pedelecs.
Do puncture-resistant tires roll slower? Makers say the heavier protection adds weight. We haven't measured rolling resistance and don't quote any.
Are tubeless tires a fix for flats? We haven't verified tubeless fitment, so we don't cover it here. Ask your shop and your bike maker.
What size is my tire? Read it from the sidewall as above.
