Short answer

Rad's 2019 RadWagon manual lists six common codes: 21 (abnormal current), 22 (throttle fault), 23 (motor phase fault), 24 (motor Hall fault), 25 (brake switch fault, or brake applied while turning on) and 30 (communication fault). Rad's Help Center has step-by-step guides for 21, 22 and 23 only. The manual says that when any code shows you should stop riding and contact Rad.

Law / safety note

Check your battery label first. On 24 Nov 2025 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned owners to stop using Rad batteries with model numbers RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y and HL-RP-S1304 because of a fire risk. If your battery is one of these, don't troubleshoot a code, and don't keep charging or riding. Read what Rad Power Bikes owners can do now and the CPSC warning.

We document Rad's codes because owners still have these bikes and still see these codes. That isn't a recommendation to buy one. If you're shopping, our Rad Power Bikes alternatives page is the better start.

What Rad publishes, and what it doesn't

Rad's older support site had separate code pages for its color-display bikes and the RadTrike. When we checked on 24 October 2026, those addresses on support.radpowerbikes.com returned "page not found", so we don't repeat what they used to say. What's live today:

  • The owner's manual. The 2019 RadWagon manual (V4-004) has an "Error Detection" section with the six codes below. Rad says these are "the most common" codes. Newer models have their own manuals on Rad's Assembly Videos and Manuals page, and we haven't confirmed that every current model uses the same list. Check yours.
  • Help Center guides. Error 21, 22 and 23 each have a guide, written around a 2019 RadCity Step-Thru. Rad says the steps are "the same for most models."
  • No official guide for 24, 25 or 30 that we could find. For those, all we have from Rad is the manual's definition and its advice to contact Rad.

Rad Power Bikes error codes at a glance

Code What Rad says it means Safe checks you can do When to contact Rad
21 Abnormal current. On an LCD display Rad says it points to a problem with power going from the battery to the controller; on an LED display, pedal assist level "0" flashes Switch off and on again. Rad says this "can often" clear it. Don't push the bike hard up long hills or past its weight limit If it returns, or the battery contacts or tray look wet, dirty or damaged
22 Throttle fault. On an LCD display it "often indicates a throttle issue"; on an LED display, level "1" flashes Look at the throttle and its cable for pinching or damage. With the battery out, check the visible throttle connector is seated If the connector is damp, dirty or damaged, or the code returns
23 Motor phase fault, meaning a problem with the motor phase wires. On an LED display, levels "0" and "1" flash together With the battery out, look at the motor cable by the rear wheel and check the visible connector is seated Any damage, moisture or dirt in the connector, or if the code stays
24 Motor Hall fault (manual wording) Switch off and on again; check the visible motor cable is seated Rad's manual says to stop and contact Rad
25 Brake switch fault, or brake applied while turning on (manual wording) Make sure both brake levers are fully released, then restart If it returns with levers released
30 Communication fault (manual wording) Switch off, check the battery is fully seated, restart If it returns

The Rad manual's advice sits above the table: "If your bike has an error code displayed at any time it is recommended that you cease operation and contact Rad Power Bikes immediately." Everything in the "safe checks" column is our narrower list of things an owner can do without tools.

Steps to try, in order

  1. Stop riding and switch the bike off. Note the exact code, and whether you were climbing, braking, or just starting.
  2. Check the label on the battery against the CPSC model numbers above. If it matches, stop here.
  3. Switch on again. For code 21, Rad says turning off and on "can often clear" it.
  4. Check what you can see. Is the battery fully seated and locked? Do the brake levers spring back? Is any cable pinched or hanging?
  5. For 22 and 23, Rad's guides say to turn the bike off, remove the battery and press the power or MODE button to discharge remaining power. Then look at the throttle or motor connector. Rad's own wording is to pull the two halves "directly apart, without twisting," look inside for moisture, dirt or damage, then line up the notch and arrows and push them straight back together. If you aren't comfortable with that, take it to a shop instead.
  6. Reinstall the battery and test before you ride.

What Rad's Error 21 guide adds, and why we stop short

Rad's Error 21 guide goes further than we do. It has you unplug the battery connector and the motor connector under the frame, snipping zip ties to reach them. It also says that if contacts or connectors look wet, dirty or damaged you should contact Rad's product support. We don't list the battery-connector or zip-tie steps as owner checks, because they involve the bike's main power wiring. Rad's own page ends with a warning that ebike repair "can require specialized tools and skills" and recommends a professional bike mechanic.

Stop here: contact the maker or a qualified e-bike shop

If a code returns after the checks above, stop here. Don't open the battery, motor, controller or wiring, and don't charge a battery that's damaged, hot, swollen or smelly. Contact Rad at 1-800-939-0310 (phone and text, Monday to Friday 8 am to 4 pm PT; text also Saturday and Sunday 9 am to 2 pm PT, per Rad's Help Center) or through chat, or use Rad's service locations to find a shop. Take photos of any wet or damaged connector.

Warranty and support are a separate question

Rad's own warranty page says the current owner has no obligation to provide warranty or other service for products bought before 15 December 2025. Whether that affects you is covered on our Rad owners page. A battery that won't charge is a different problem from an error code; Rad's charging help page and our e-bike battery won't charge guide cover it.

FAQ

What does Rad error code 30 mean? Rad's 2019 manual calls it a "Communication Fault." Rad doesn't have a Help Center guide for it that we could find. Switch off, check the battery is seated, restart, and contact Rad or a shop if it returns.

What do the flashing pedal assist lights mean on an LED display? Rad's guides say level "0" flashes for error 21, level "1" for error 22, and "0" and "1" together for error 23.

Can I clear a Rad error code by resetting the display? Rad doesn't describe a reset for these codes. Its guidance is to switch the bike off and on, then work through the checks. If a code won't clear, the cause is still there.

Is it safe to keep riding with a code showing? Rad's manual says to stop riding and contact Rad. We'd follow that.
