How long do e-bike batteries last? Maker cycle counts
Last checked Oct 24, 2026 · By EbikePost editors

No maker we checked promises a lifespan in years or miles. What they publish is a warranty period measured in years and full charge cycles, and the pack that ships with your bike is the one that counts. Bosch's warranty runs to 500 full charge cycles, while Aventon and Rad Power Bikes each state 300 cycles, all with a time limit too. A warranty is not a prediction of when a battery will fail, but it is the only figure the makers themselves put in writing. Lectric's manual says capacity diminishes as a pack ages and that a much shorter ride per charge means the pack is worn out.
What the makers put in writing
Warranty terms are the best sourced figures available, and each maker defines its own "cycle", so read its definition. Check the page for the year and country you bought in, because terms change.
| Maker | Battery warranty period (whichever comes first) | Capacity wording |
|---|---|---|
| Bosch (North America limited warranty, July 2024) | 24 months from first consumer purchase, or 48 months from the battery production date (not for batteries bought in California), or 500 full charge cycles | The warranty remedy applies if the battery does not meet its "Guaranteed Capacity" |
| Aventon | Two years from original retail purchase, or 300 charging cycles | Designed to retain up to 75% of original capacity during the coverage period |
| Rad Power Bikes | 300 recharge cycles or 2 years from the begin date | Capacity not guaranteed; proper care should leave up to 75% remaining for years |
| Lectric | One-year warranty on most components; extended plans exclude the battery | No cycle count found on the help page |
| Ride1Up | One-year guarantee against manufacturing defects | No cycle count found on the page; damage from improper storage or charging is excluded |
We could not confirm a current cycle count for Velotric on its own pages, so check its warranty page for your model. These are the periods a maker will stand behind, so a battery can keep working after them, and can also fall short of them if it is damaged or misused. Commercial users have shorter periods under Bosch's terms.
What the manuals say shortens battery life
- Long storage at full or empty. Tern's Bosch battery guide says prolonged storage at a fully charged or fully discharged state can shorten life. Lectric's manual says about 60% charge when storing for weeks or months, and that at about 60% the battery degrades less than at higher charge levels. Rad's guide gives 50 to 75 percent for storage.
- Heat and cold. Lectric's manual says to protect the motor, display and battery from extreme temperatures. Tern's Bosch guide says not to store the battery below 32 °F or above 104 °F, and to charge it at room temperature.
- Leaving it on the charger. Lectric's manual says not to charge unattended or leave the battery connected overnight and that leaving it permanently connected is not recommended.
- Using the wrong charger. Rad's and Ride1Up's warranty text excludes damage from an improper charger or improper charging, and Lectric says to use only the charger supplied or approved.
- Water. See our rain guide on keeping ports sealed.
Habits you can follow
These are the safe owner steps. They do not involve opening anything.
- Charge indoors, dry, using the maker's charger, and be present. Our UL 2849 guide lists CPSC's pointers.
- Follow your manual's storage level for winter or a long break (Lectric: about 60%, check every 2 to 3 months).
- Keep the battery at room temperature when it charges. Bring a cold battery inside first.
- Do not leave it full for weeks. See our guide on charging to 80 percent for what makers say about charge level.
- Watch your range. A real drop in distance per charge is the sign makers point to. Lectric's manual says a significantly reduced operating period after charging indicates the pack is worn out. Our range guide lists what else changes range, such as cold, hills and load.
Tern says that to learn the status or charge-cycle count of a Bosch battery, you take it to a certified Bosch dealer or service center for diagnostics. That report is also useful when buying a used e-bike.
Replacing a battery
Replacement is for the maker or a qualified shop, using an approved pack. Lectric's manual says to buy a replacement battery pack from Lectric. Do not open a pack, test cells or rebuild a pack. Bosch's warranty excludes products that have been opened. See our UL 2849 guide for certification questions. For a pack that will not charge, start with e-bike battery not charging.
If the battery is aging and the rest of the bike is too, compare the cost with a new bike: our best commuter e-bikes and best e-bikes under $1,500 are starting points.
Rad Power Bikes batteries
On 24 November 2025 the CPSC told owners to stop using Rad batteries with model numbers RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y and HL-RP-S1304 because of a fire risk. Check your battery label and read what Rad owners can do now.
When to see a shop or contact the maker: range has dropped sharply, the battery will not charge, it gets very hot, swells, leaks or smells unusual. In that case stop using it, do not open it, and follow your manual's emergency advice. Lectric's manual says to evacuate and notify the fire department if you notice these signs while charging.
FAQ
How long should an ebike battery last? No maker states it. Warranties end at whichever comes first: for Bosch 24 months or 500 full charge cycles (with a 48-month production-date limit), and for Aventon and Rad two years or 300 cycles.
What is the ebike battery life cycle? It is the count of full charges. Bosch's warranty counts 500 full charge cycles; Aventon and Rad count 300.
What is the ebike battery shelf life? Makers give storage advice, not a shelf life. Lectric says to store at about 60% and check every 2 to 3 months.
How do I take care of an ebike battery? Use the maker's charger, charge in a dry place while you are present, avoid heat and cold, and store at the level your manual gives.
How do I maintain an ebike battery? There is no owner maintenance inside it. Keep it clean and dry, and leave every repair to the maker or a shop.
