How to choose a commuter e-bike

The best ebike for commuting is the one you can ride daily without thinking about it: enough battery for the round trip, brakes you trust, and a weight and fit that suit how you store it. These are the factors in our commute Spec score and the order to check them (how we score).

  1. Battery for the round trip. Battery size in watt-hours (Wh) is the main range factor. Our scale runs from 300 Wh (low) to 750 Wh (full marks). The picks here list 672 to 733 Wh. Plan for the real distance with a margin, and charge at your destination if you can.
  2. Removable battery. If you cannot charge the bike where you park it, a removable battery lets you take it inside to charge. Our records show it as removable for the Pace 5 REC, Level 4 REC and XPress2, but do not state it for the Discover 2.
  3. Brakes. Hydraulic disc brakes are the standard to look for on a daily rider. All four list them.
  4. Weight. You may carry it up a step or onto a rack. These picks weigh 60.48 lb (Pace 5 REC), 63 lb (Discover 2), 66 lb (XPress2) and 68.5 lb (Level 4 REC).
  5. Torque sensor or cadence sensor. A torque sensor ties assist to how hard you pedal; a cadence sensor adds assist when you pedal. Our records list sensor type for some bikes only, so check the maker's page if it matters to you.
  6. UL 2849. It covers the whole e-bike electrical system. Our records list all four bikes as certified.

Also look at what is included. The Level 4 REC lists a rack and fenders; the Discover 2 lists a rack and full fenders. Our commute score does not count accessories, so factor them in yourself.

How the picks differ

Aventon Pace 5 REC (maker price on Oct 23, 2026: $1,799). A step-through with a 750 W motor (1,188 W peak), 80 Nm, a 733 Wh removable battery, claimed range up to 75 miles and top assisted speed 28 mph. At 60.48 lb it is the lightest of the four. Riders 5'0" to 6'3". Rigid fork.

Aventon Level 4 REC (maker price on Oct 23, 2026: $1,999). A step-over commuter with the same motor and battery (733 Wh), a rack and fenders, a throttle and 2-piston hydraulic brakes. It weighs 68.5 lb. Riders 5'3" to 6'4". Warranty is 2 years on frame, motor and battery.

Velotric Discover 2 (maker price on Oct 23, 2026: $1,499). A 750 W motor, 75 Nm, a 705.6 Wh battery, claimed range up to 75 miles, at 63 lb. Default top speed is 20 mph, adjustable from 12 to 28. It lists riders 4'11" to 6'4" and a 440 lb max load. Warranty: frame 5 years, battery and electrical parts 2 years.

FAQ

Is the battery safe?

Look for UL 2849 certification of the whole e-bike system, use only the maker's charger and follow the manual. Our records list all four bikes as UL 2849 certified. For recalls and official guidance see the CPSC Micromobility Information Center.

Is it legal where I live?

Class rules, minimum age, helmet laws and where you can ride vary by state and sometimes by city. Use our state e-bike law checker. It is general information, not legal advice.

What if the brand struggles and I need service?

Aventon has a help desk, a phone line (Mon to Fri, 9am to 4pm PST) and a bike-shop locator; bikes bought from shops are not covered by its online return policy. Velotric promotes nearby support and a dealer locator, without stating the number of dealers or mobile repair. Lectric uses certified partner shops, with owners contacting Lectric support first. For a daily commuter, find a local shop that will work on the brand before you buy.

How far will it really go?

Claimed maximums: up to 75 miles (Pace 5 REC, Level 4 REC, Discover 2) and up to 60 miles (XPress2). Assist level, rider weight, hills, stops and cold all reduce this. Use our range estimator for a more careful band, and keep a margin for the return trip.

Will it handle my hills?

Torque: 85 Nm (XPress2), 80 Nm (Pace 5 REC, Level 4 REC), 75 Nm (Discover 2). All are rear hub motors. For steep routes see best e-bikes for hills.

How do I stop it being stolen?

A commuter bike is parked in public every day, so lock the frame to a fixed object and take the battery with you if it is removable.

Will it fit me, and can I carry it?

Rider heights: Pace 5 REC 5'0" to 6'3", Level 4 REC 5'3" to 6'4", Discover 2 4'11" to 6'4", XPress2 5'4" to 6'4". Weights are 60 to 68.5 lb.

Can I return it?

Aventon: 14 days, no restocking fee for new, unused bikes (1 mile or less), buyer pays $125 return shipping. Velotric: 14 days, $200 restocking fee per bike, prepaid label. Lectric: 14 days, up to $300 restocking at its discretion, buyer pays shipping. See the policy pages linked in the sources below.
