Best Electric Bikes for Heavy Riders: Weight Limits

Last checked Oct 23, 2026 · By EbikePost editors

Short answer

Pick from the maker's published weight limit, not the marketing, and leave headroom for anything you carry. Four verified bikes list limits from 330 to 505 lb. Our pick: Velotric Nomad 2.

We compare makers' published specs, warranties and return policies; we don't ride the bikes. How we score →

How to choose an e-bike for heavier riders

If you are looking for the best ebike for heavy riders, the first number to find is the weight limit, and the second is what that limit actually includes. An electric bike weight limit of 300 lb means very different things on different bikes. These are the checks that matter, in the order we weigh them in our heavy-rider Spec score (how we score).

  1. Read the limit as the maker defines it. Some makers publish a maximum rider weight, others a total weight limit that includes the bike, gear and cargo. The figures on this page are the makers' own: Velotric lists a Max Bike Load of 505 lb for the Nomad 2 and 440 lb for the Discover 2, Aventon lists a total weight limit of 440 lb for the Abound SR and 330 lb for the Pace 5 REC. If a limit is a total, subtract the bike's weight and anything you carry.
  2. Leave headroom. A rider close to a bike's limit has no margin for a backpack or groceries. Choose a limit comfortably above your weight plus gear.
  3. Check the brakes. More mass needs more stopping power. All four bikes list hydraulic disc brakes. The Nomad 2 has 203 mm front and 180 mm rear rotors; the Abound SR has 180 mm front and 203 mm rear.
  4. Look at torque and the motor. Torque helps with starting and climbing. The Nomad 2 lists 90 Nm; the Abound SR and Pace 5 REC list 80 Nm; the Discover 2 lists 75 Nm.
  5. Consider tire width. Wider tires (the Nomad 2 has 4 in, the Abound SR has 3 in) carry load over rough surfaces.
  6. Check the bike's own weight and the frame. Heavy bikes are harder to lift and store, and a step-through frame (Abound SR, Pace 5 REC) is easier to get on and off.

How the picks differ

Velotric Nomad 2 (maker price on Oct 23, 2026: $1,999). A fat-tire bike on 26 x 4 in tires with a 100 mm suspension fork, a 750 W motor (1,300 W peak), 90 Nm of torque, a torque sensor and a 705.6 Wh removable battery. Claimed range is up to 65 miles. It weighs 75 lb. Riders 4'11" to 6'5". It has the highest limit here. Velotric lists a 5-year frame warranty.

Aventon Abound SR (maker price on Oct 23, 2026: $1,899). A compact step-through with 20 x 3 in wheels, 80 Nm of torque and a 733 Wh battery. It carries one passenger. It weighs 80 lb and lists a total weight limit of 440 lb. Top speed is 20 mph, adjustable to 25 per the maker.

Velotric Discover 2 (maker price on Oct 23, 2026: $1,499). A commuter with a 750 W motor, 75 Nm of torque and a 705.6 Wh battery, at 63 lb. The 440 lb Max Bike Load is the maker's figure. It lists riders from 4'11" to 6'4" and includes a rack and full fenders. Not a fat-tire or folding bike.

Aventon Pace 5 REC (maker price on Oct 23, 2026: $1,799). A step-through with swept-back bars, a 750 W motor, 80 Nm of torque and a 733 Wh battery, at 60.48 lb. The total weight limit is 330 lb, the lowest of the four, so it suits riders with more margin. The fork is rigid.

FAQ

Is the battery safe?

Look for UL 2849 certification of the whole e-bike system, use only the maker's charger and follow the manual. Our records list all four bikes as UL 2849 certified. For recalls and official guidance see the CPSC Micromobility Information Center.

Is it legal where I live?

Class rules, minimum age, helmet laws and trail access vary by state and sometimes by city. Use our state e-bike law checker. It is general information, not legal advice.

What if the brand struggles and I need service?

Both brands sell direct online. Velotric promotes nearby support and a dealer locator but does not state the number of dealers or mobile repair. Aventon has a help desk, a phone line (Mon to Fri, 9am to 4pm PST) and a bike-shop locator; bikes bought from bike shops are not covered by Aventon's online return policy. Find a local shop that will service the brand before you buy.

How far will it really go?

Claimed maximums are up to 65 miles (Nomad 2), 60 miles (Abound SR and Pace 5 REC) and 75 miles (Discover 2). More total weight means more energy per mile, so expect less than the claim. Our range estimator gives a cautious band.

Will it handle my hills?

Torque in Nm is the guide: 90 (Nomad 2), 80 (Abound SR, Pace 5 REC), 75 (Discover 2). See best e-bikes for hills.

How do I stop it being stolen?

Lock the frame to a fixed object, and bring a removable battery inside.

Will it fit me, and can I carry it?

Rider heights: Nomad 2 4'11" to 6'5", Abound SR 4'11" to 6'3", Discover 2 4'11" to 6'4", Pace 5 REC 5'0" to 6'3". Bike weights run from about 60 to 80 lb. Plan on a ground-level spot to store it.

Can I return it?

Velotric: request within 14 days of delivery, unused and complete, $200 restocking fee per bike, prepaid label after authorization. Aventon: 14 days, no restocking fee for new, unused bikes (1 mile or less), buyer pays $125 return shipping. See Velotric and Aventon.
