How to choose an e-bike if you're tall

Plenty of e-bikes say "one size fits most." If you're 6'3" and your knees come up to the handlebars, "most" isn't you. Here's how to shop.

How we ranked: we kept only verified bikes whose maker states a maximum rider height of at least 6'2", then ordered them by that stated maximum, breaking ties by price. We picked one bike per job so you aren't reading six near-identical commuters. This is a ranking of published ranges, not of how any bike fits a given body, and it's not a road test (how we score).

  1. Read the stated height range, both ends. The maker's range runs from a minimum to a maximum height. Our picks list maximums of 6'5" to 6'7". A bike that lists 6'5" is cutting it close if you're 6'5", so treat the top of a range as a limit, not a target.
  2. Look for frame sizes, not one size. Several bikes here come in Regular and Large, or Medium, Large and Extra Large. A larger frame gives you more room between saddle and bars. A one-size frame leans on the seatpost and stem to do the work.
  3. Check the seatpost. Taller riders raise the saddle a long way. Check the seatpost's minimum-insertion mark in the manual, and see whether the maker's range depends on a longer or suspension seatpost. Velotric says exactly that for the Discover 3 and Discover M.
  4. Step-over or step-through. A step-over frame has a bar across the top and tends to suit taller riders who can lift a leg easily. A step-through has a low opening and is easier to get on and off with a load or a stiff hip. Taller riders can use either, and some bikes in this list come in both shapes. Our step-through picks cover that style.
  5. Maximum rider weight. Tall riders are often heavier too. The maker's limit covers the rider plus gear. Ours range from 300 lb to 560 lb, so check yours.
  6. Brakes and motor. Bigger riders ask more of brakes and motors. Hydraulic disc brakes are the thing to look for, and higher torque helps on hills.
  7. Returns. If you can't try a bike, the return window is your test ride. All of these makers list 14 days, with different fees.

Not sure about size? Start with our guide to what size e-bike you need.

How the picks differ

Velotric Discover 3 ($1,999, best overall). A commuter with a 750 W rear hub motor, 75 Nm, an 80 mm air fork, fenders and a rear rack. The maker lists riders 4'11" to 6'7" across Regular and Large sizes. The range depends on a suspension seatpost. It weighs 61 lb and has a 440 lb max load. Warranty: frame five years, battery two.

Velotric Discover M ($2,499, best mid-drive). The same height range, 4'11" to 6'7", with a mid-drive motor listing 100 Nm, a 9-speed drivetrain and an 801.6 Wh battery. It's 60 lb and the priciest of the Velotrics here, but it's the one that suits long climbs best on paper.

Aventon Level 4 ADV ($2,799, best for long commutes). Listed for riders 5'3" to 6'7" in Medium, Large and Extra Large. It has a mid-drive, an electronic 10-speed shifter, an 800 Wh battery and up to 110 miles listed. A throttle is compatible but not included, and the maker's rider limit is 300 lb, the lowest in this group. Two-year warranty.

Lectric XPedition2 ($1,399, best budget). A long-tail cargo bike listing riders 4'11" to 6'5". It's the cheapest of the six, with 85 Nm, a 450 lb payload rating and a 300 lb rear rack. It's 77 in long and 74 lb with one battery. Warranty is one year.

Velotric Fold 1 Plus ($1,499, best folding). One size, with a low step-thru frame that folds in three steps. The maker lists riders 4'9" to 6'5". With 20-inch wheels and a 450 lb max load, it's a car-trunk bike that still lists tall riders. It weighs 63 lb and the battery is 608 Wh.

Velotric Nomad 2X ($2,399, best for tall and heavy). Fat tires, a 120 mm air fork and an 80 mm rear shock, with 105 Nm and a 560 lb max load. It comes in Step-Thru and High-Step frames and lists riders 4'11" to 6'5". It's 80 lb, so plan on storing it at ground level.

Who should skip all of these

If you're over 6'7", none of these list your height, and we can't say how a bike will fit you. The same goes for anyone who needs a very light bike: every pick here weighs 60 lb or more. And if you're 6'2" to 6'4", you have far more choices than this page shows, since many bikes list a range that reaches those heights. Our commuter and hills pages list more bikes, each with the maker's stated height range.
